Weightlifting beats running for blood sugar control – New Study

Researchers at Virginia Tech have unveiled new evidence suggesting that weightlifting offers greater benefits than running in managing blood sugar and reducing obesity-related health risks. Their study, published on October 30 in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, marks the first direct comparison between resistance training and endurance exercise using a novel mouse model designed to mimic human weightlifting.

The research team, led by Professor Zhen Yan at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, engineered specialized cages where mice performed a squat-like motion to lift weighted lids in order to access their food. This revolutionary setup allowed for controlled resistance training in mice over eight weeks, alongside other groups with access to running wheels or no exercise.

Results showed both resistance training and running decreased fat deposits and improved blood glucose regulation, but weightlifting led to significantly better outcomes in glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Mice engaged in weightlifting exhibited enhanced insulin signaling in skeletal muscle independent of muscle mass gains or workout performance, indicating distinctive metabolic effects tied to resistance exercise.

These findings highlight potential new strategies for diabetes and obesity interventions, especially for those unable to perform endurance activities. Professor Yan stressed that combining both types of exercise remains advisable to maximize health benefits. The study also suggests that muscle signaling pathways altered by resistance training could guide future diabetes drug development, reinforcing that medication cannot replace exercise’s complex effects.

Overall, this research presents compelling data supporting resistance training as a crucial component in metabolic health management and diabetes prevention protocols. It urges healthcare providers to consider weightlifting’s specific advantages alongside traditional cardio exercises.
